Does Your Child Love the Water but Lose Confidence When You Let Go?
Your child loves the pool. They splash, play and happily explore the water — as long as they’re holding onto you.
But the moment you loosen your grip, the confidence disappears.
Sound familiar?
For many young children, being comfortable in the water and being confident independently are two very different things.
Confidence Comes Before Independence
When a child is being held by a parent, they have a familiar source of physical and emotional support. Take that support away and suddenly they need to trust their own body and skills in the water.
That transition takes time.
Before becoming confident independent swimmers, children need opportunities to practise skills such as:
Putting their face in the water
Blowing bubbles and controlling their breathing
Floating and recovering
Kicking and moving through the water
Returning to a safe position
Entering and exiting the water safely
Following instructions without relying on a parent
Each little success helps build confidence.
Try Not to Rush the "Let Go"
It can be tempting to think, "They can do it — they just won't let me go."
But confidence isn't something we can force.
For some children, the physical swimming skills develop before the confidence to use them independently. For others, confidence comes quickly while the swimming skills need more time and repetition.
Both are progress.
The goal is to gradually reduce the support a child needs while allowing them to experience success along the way.
This Is Why We Focus on Progress, Not Just Age
At Bubble ’n’ Kick, children progress based on their skills, confidence and readiness, rather than simply reaching a particular birthday.
Our parent-assisted programs gradually prepare children for that exciting next step — swimming with their instructor without Mum or Dad in the pool.
And when they finally do let go?
That's a huge milestone. 💙
But it's also just the beginning.
From there, we continue developing independent swimming, breathing, floating, stamina, survival skills and water-safety awareness.
Is Your Child Ready for More Independence?
If your child loves the water but still relies heavily on you, don't worry about comparing them to other children.
Instead, ask:
What skill or confidence does my child need to develop next?
Our Swim Team can help you understand where your child is currently at, what they're working towards and how we can gradually help them become a more confident, independent swimmer.
Because sometimes the biggest swimming milestone isn't swimming further.
It's finally having the confidence to let go. 💦
