At Bubble’n’Kick Swim School, we believe in building confident, capable, and water-wise children from the very beginning. One of the most exciting milestones in your child’s swimming journey is the transition from parent-assisted classes to independent swimming lessons—and for some children, this can happen as early as two years old.
But how does it work? What makes a child ready? And why do we recommend aiming for independence before turning 3?
Let’s dive in.
🌊 Why Start Independent Swimming So Young?
Children are far more capable than we often give them credit for—especially when given the right foundation.
For families who begin swimming with us early (from as young as 4 months through our FREE Water Babies Program), the journey from parent-assisted to independent classes happens naturally. Our structured, nurturing, and progression-based programs build water confidence, listening skills, and body awareness—so by the time they’re around 2, many children are ready to take the plunge without mum or dad in the pool.
✅ What Makes a Child Ready?
We look at a few key things when assessing a child’s readiness for independent swimming:
Swimming History – Children with consistent exposure to lessons are more likely to transition early.
Skill Set – Basic water safety, floating, kicking, and submersion skills help with independence.
Listening Ability – Can they follow instructions from their teacher?
Parent Separation – Are they comfortable in the water without needing constant reassurance?
We don’t base progression on age alone—we base it on ability and confidence.
🤝 A Gentle Transition, Guided by Experts
Our team works closely with families to make sure each child transitions at the right time and pace. Some children may start with short independent bursts during class, while others move straight into full sessions without a parent in the pool.
If your child is currently between 2 and 3 years old and:
Has been swimming with us for a while,
Shows strong listening skills and water confidence,
Or you believe they’re ready to begin swimming independently...
💬 Talk to our team! We’ll develop a personalised independent swim plan and guide you and your child every step of the way.
🎯 Not With Us Yet, But Ready for Independence?
If your child hasn’t been part of our swim school but you feel they’re ready to swim without you, we’d love to meet you. Joining our program now—even for a short time—can help us build trust and confidence, so your child can successfully move into independent lessons before turning 3.
Our goal is to help all children achieve water independence before school starts—because the earlier they start, the stronger their skills (and safety!) become.
💡 Parents: Your Role Evolves, Not Ends
Moving out of the pool doesn’t mean you’re out of the loop. You’re still a key part of the journey. Our instructors provide regular feedback, and we encourage you to stay engaged in your child’s progress through observation, encouragement, and communication with our team.
